About Detours

For Adults

Journeys of Discovery

Detours offers opportunities for adults and family groups to volunteer abroad in community projects organised by our partner organisations in the developing world. Come with us to Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, India, Nepal, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Borneo, Peru or Ecuador where we'll introduce you to local people who will welcome you to their community and work alongside you to make their world a better place to live.

Our projects are organised by communities at grassroots level. Your volunteer abroad experience will be a wonderful way to gain access to those communities.

Our program promotes understanding and tolerance, supports local people and enables you to immerse yourself in the daily life of the community.

You can opt to participate in three broad areas - education, health and community services. This may include teaching, health education and
administration, building and renovation or care work - orphanage, child care or disabled children. Your choice.

You can volunteer from 4-12 weeks as an individual or part of a team of volunteers from other countries (depending on the destination we can sometimes offer 2 week placements). We'll support you every step of the way and provide back-up once you are in-country. What skills do you need?

Enthusiasm, spirit, an open mind, patience and a sense of humour.

WHAT WE ARRANGE FOR YOU

- Pre-departure Guide and Destination Brief
- Pre-screened volunteer work placement
- Accommodation and board
- 24 hour in-country support backed up by our Australian office
- Meet & Greet
- Transfers to and from your placement

You can join Detours as an individual traveller or as a member of a small group. Why not create your own? You don't need any special skills to participate. Volunteer placements overseas are suitable for travellers who want to experience a deeper community involvement. It's an opportunity to 'give something back'.

We can also tailor an itinerary that includes a voluntary stint of up to two weeks if you prefer. These itineraries are suitable for families, small groups or travellers with restricted time.

We are fully owned and managed in Australia. Our base in Australia means we understand our Australian travellers and our clients appreciate the confidence and familiarity of visiting our Sydney office and dealing with staff based in Australia.

Contact us to discuss the travel opportunities we offer, or for a tailored itinerary to suit you.
